A teenage victim of Brazil’s police has the country outraged and focused on police violence against Afro-Brazilians

Ten days ago police in Rio de Janeiro killed 14-year-old João Pedro Matos Pinto during a botched drug raid in a poor neighborhood. That fact alone was not unusual. Brazilian police have a long record of violence against young men, especially Afro-Brazilians. But what is unusual is the response by Brazilians. They are outraged and taking to the streets to demonstrate against police violence and the treatment of Afro-Brazilians. Marco Werman speaks with Mauricio Santoro, a specialist on Brazilian politics at the State University of Rio de Janeiro.
