A previous outbreak in Malaysia

The World

An infectious disease outbreak in Malaysia in 1998-99 killed more than 100 people, and led to the culling of more than a million pigs. But the Nipah virus outbreak was really a success story. It started on a single farm, and scientists were able to figure out how the virus jumped from bats to pigs, and then on to humans. Kyle Vass has the story of how the Nipah virus experience has helped Malaysia deal with the novel coronavirus outbreak.
