A new owl type was found in Príncipe and now it’s endangered

The World

An international team of scientists have described a new type of owl, called the Príncipe scops-owl on Príncipe Island off the western coast of central Africa. The owl had been seen by locals for the last century, but eluded scientists. Describing a new species is always exciting, but also daunting, because the owl is critically endangered. The World’s host Marco Werman speaks to PhD candidate Bárbara Freitas who found the owl with the help of local guides. Freitas is a scientist at the Museum of Natural Sciences in Madrid.
