New Orleans native Jack Gilmore, 23, took his first trip abroad to work as a cook on the Nathaniel B. Palmer research vessel in Antarctica this past winter. Seeing the massive Thwaites Glacier — which is melting fast, and could trigger something like 11 feet of sea level rise — made him think about what this faraway continent could mean for his home city.
