Rare palm plant’s flowers and fruit growing underground excites botanists

In nature, you will never find a flower growing underground, unless you take a trip to the southeast Asian island of Borneo — and witness a truly unusual plant. New to scientists, Pinanga subterranea is a species of palm with the remarkable ability to grow flowers and fruit beneath the soil. As London-based botanist Ben Kuhnhäuser tells host Marco Werman, how the plant survives is a mystery.
