For years, Catalonians took to the streets to demand national independence from Spain. Then in 2017, Catalonia’s President Carles Puigdemont stood before the Catalan Parliament and declared, illegally, that the region had separated. He then fled to Brussels, where he’s been making his case to the European Union. But Spain wants to put Puigdemont on trial. The EU’s highest court recently ruled in its favor.
