The “Gaia hypothesis” proposes that the planet is a complex, self-regulating system, a community of organisms that creates and maintains the conditions for life. The author of that theory was a British scientist named James Lovelock. Lovelock died on Wednesday surrounded by family. He leaves behind a vast collection of writing and ideas that continue to influence a new generation of scientists and thinkers.
