Hong Kong Catholics feeling Beijing’s political fetters

Hong Kong has changed radically since 2020 when China imposed a harsh security law. The territory’s 7 million citizens now face severe penalties for criticizing the Chinese Communist Party — and religious leaders do not get a free pass. The Hong Kong government is taking a special interest in Catholic priests, seeking to weed out priests and bishops who invoke pro-democracy messages in their sermons.
