This month, Zanzibar celebrated the 58th anniversary of its revolution, which toppled the Sultan of Zanzibar shortly after achieving independence from colonial Britain. Now, a new film by Tanzanian filmmaker Amil Shivji is looking back at its colonial past. “Tug of War” is based on a famous Swahili novel by Adam Shafi of the same name, which premiered in Zanzibar last month to a crowded audience.
