President Donald Trump signed a bill into law yesterday authorizing sanctions against Chinese officials engaged in the mass detention of the Uighur minority in western China. More than 1 million have been held for at least two years in what human rights groups call concentration camps. On the same day, excerpts were leaked from the upcoming book by Trump’s former national security adviser, John Bolton, alleging Trump had praised the camps in a meeting with his Chinese counterpart.
