Uighur activist has ‘mixed feelings’ over US Uighur human rights law enacted this week

The World

The Trump administration signed the Uighur Human Rights Law into action this week, and while it’s a victory for many Uighur activists, Ferkat Jawdat says that he has “mixed feelings.” The law comes, coincidentally, just when former national security adviser John Bolton’s upcoming book alleges that Donald Trump knew about the detainment camps in western Xinjiang. Host Marco Werman speaks with Jawdat about the bill and what’s next for his advocacy.

At The World, we believe strongly that human-centered journalism is at the heart of an informed public and a strong democracy. We see democracy and journalism as two sides of the same coin. If you care about one, it is imperative to care about the other.

Every day, our nonprofit newsroom seeks to inform and empower listeners and hold the powerful accountable. Neither would be possible without the support of listeners like you. If you believe in our work, will you give today? We need your help now more than ever!
