Here’s what you’ll find on today’s show:
— Another school shooting, this time at Santa Fe High School in Santa Fe, Texas, has left ten people dead and around ten others injured. The shooter, Dimitrios Pagourtzis, 17, was taken into police custody. The incident is raising questions over what to do about children’s safety in schools and the ensuing debate is continuing to divide the country over gun control issues.
— Hyperinflation, food shortages and unemployment weren’t enough to keep Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro from securing a renewed six-year mandate as to lead the country over the weekend. By the end of 2018, an estimated three million people will have left Venezuela, accounting for around one tenth of Venezuela’s population. Thousands of those people are taking the same path, crossing the Simón Bolívar International Bridge into the Colombian city of Cúcuta.
— The educational toy market is worth about $4 billion a year. The allure of these items lies in their claims of increasing childhood intelligence during a critical time in the child’s cognitive development. Many toys advertise themselves as tools to help babies do everything from read and walk, or do math and code, all earlier than they would without the assistance. But there’s little science to back these claims up.
