Matthew Stein is the current regional editor of The Independent, a newsweekly magazine published in Kampala, Uganda. Stein’s work takes him to all corners of the East African region from where he writes and coordinates stories. Stein began his reporting career in Bogota, Colombia before relocating to Africa where he has since filed stories from Egypt, Ethiopia, Somaliland, Sudan and Rwanda.
Stein has written for The Globe and Mail, San Francisco Chronicle, the Montreal Gazette, Outpost magazine, World Politics Review and the Oxford Owl.
A native of Montreal, Canada, Stein holds a BA in Political Science from McGill University and a Master’s of Journalism from Ryerson University. In March he will begin teaching a class on investigative journalism at Kampala’s Makerere University.
