Thanks to PRI’s Across Women’s Lives, millions of people have gotten to know Pakistan’s first female fighter pilot. They have met Italy’s first female astronaut. And they have heard from the women solar engineers who are electifying the lives of the rural poor in Zanzibar.
They’ve learned about women seafood divers in South Korea who are the breadwinners in their families. They've shared the pain of nursing students in Ghana who work for years carrying heavy loads to pay for school and a way out of restricted lives. They've listened to the songs of an Afghan rapper whose music protected her from being a child bride.
Then there’s the defiant Iranian cartoonist who is in prison for her sketches, an Indian professor who spent six years working through the night to earn her PhD, and a German neonatologist who was denied her original medical degree by the Nazis because she was a Jew — but finally earned it 70 years later.
These women — and many more — are changing the world by overcoming hurdles and setting an example for others. Their lives have inspired more than 100,000 people to share their stories and discuss the unequal treatment that women face every day, everywhere.
In fact, each week, an average of 7,800 people explore, share and discuss PRI’s Across Women’s Lives coverage using Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and other social networks.
And the social hashtag we unleashed in partnership with SheKnows Media — #womenslives — has reached more than 16 million people.
Each day, we receive more evidence that our stories inspire people to take their own actions to help change the world.
"Dear PRI, Today, June 11 there was a story on The World about women in Ghana working to get an education. It highlighted a woman named Salome Solomon who is trying to save $500 for a nursing degree … We would like to provide $500 for Salome to use for her degree and another $500 for another woman to do the same."
We are grateful for the privilege to tell these stories. And we are grateful for the generous individuals who support PRI’s Across Women’s Lives coverage. Come join us in changing the world for women and girls.
