The singer-songwriter Shilpa Ray wasn’t allowed to listen to rock as a kid. She did anyway, and now she combines her Indian classical music training with punk to make infectious pop.

“I think I’m blessed in tuning harmoniums,” says Mindra Sahadeo, who is from Guyana but now lives in New York City. “I find joy, actually, in fixing them.”
