An estimated 500 canines and 3,000 humans gathered in New York City’s oldest dog run last weekend for the 21st annual Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade. This year’s attendees included Elvis, Yoda, a Doggie in the Window, and the M23 bus (named Best in Show).
I went in hopes of finding inspiration for my own Halloween costume but quickly realized that my body type doesn’t easily lend itself to transforming into, say, a cigarette (see the slideshow below). All the same, it was impossible not to wander around the scene with a permagrin, delighting in the picture-perfect fall day.
Spotted at the procession: renowned street photographer Mary Ellen Mark, capturing the pooches and their creative owners with analog cameras accompanied by light-toting assistants.
