France shooting: Four people shot dead in French Alps

Four people have been shot dead in the French Alps.

Their bodies were found earlier today in or close to a British-registered BMW car on a forest road near the village of Chevaline in the Haute-Savoie region, the Associated Press reported.

Agence France-Presse reported that a seriously wounded young girl found at the scene had been taken to hospital and was in a critical condition in the intensive care ward.

She had been hit by at least three bullets, The Telegraph reported.

"It is a dramatic crime scene like we see on the TV. We are employing all necessary means to investigate," local prosecutor Eric Maillaud was quoted by The Telegraph as saying.

"Two men and two women are the victims. The car is a British-registered BMW estate.

"One of the male victims was a cyclist. He was found near his bike in his cycling gear. The other man was in the driving seat of the car. The two women were in the back of the car.

"There is a large number of gun cartridges at the crime scene."

The area has been sealed off and a multiple murder investigation is under way.
