El Salvador: Earthquake strikes off coast

A magnitude-7.3 earthquake struck off the coast off El Salvador early on Monday, sparking a now-cancelled tsunami warning for the region.

A magnitude 5.4 trembler followed, though there were no immediate reports of damages or injuries.

According to David Walsh, an oceanographer with the Pacific Tsunami Center in Hawaii, who spoke with the Associated Press, a minor tsunami (10 centimeters) was registered off Acajutla, El Salvador, but NBC News reported that the tsunami warning had been cancelled.

CNN reports that because El Salvador is located on an arc of fault lines that circle the Pacific Ocean, the country is prone to both frequent earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
