Colorado prison staffer dies in mysterious incident

A female staff member at an all-male Colorado prison was killed at work this morning, BBC News reported. She was killed in an "incident" involving an inmate, officials told the BBC. Another female employee was seriously injured in the incident. It occurred in the kitchen as the staff members prepared breakfast.

The names of the victims have not been released, the Denver Post reported. And no details about what happened have been provided. "We are deeply saddened by the death this morning of a staff member at the Arkansas Valley Correctional Facility. Our condolences go to her family and her co-workers at the facility," the office of Gov. John Hickenlooper said in a statement to the Post.

The inmate was subdued after the incident, a spokesman told the Associated Press. The injured staffer remains in critical condition, and the prison, the Arkansas Valley Correctional Facility in Crowley, was put on lockdown. It houses about 1,000 male prisoners and gained notoriety in 1989 when a helicopter managed to fly into the prison yard and helped two inmates escaped.
