Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer hospitalized after bike crash
Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer is in the hospital after breaking his shoulder in a bicycle accident.
Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer underwent surgery on Saturday to repair a broken shoulder after a bicycle accident.
"Associate Justice Stephen Breyer underwent reverse shoulder replacement surgery for a proximal humerus fracture this morning at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital," court spokesperson Kathleen Arberg said.
He fell from his bicycle on Friday afternoon while riding near the Korean War Veterans Memorial, fracturing his right shoulder, according to the statement.
Justice Breyer was taken to the hospital by ambulance where he is expected to remain until early next week.
The justice has had several cycling accidents, the most recent when he broke his collarbone in 2011. He also broke several ribs and punctured a lung in a 1993 accident.
The 74-year-old was appointed to the Supreme Court by President Bill Clinton in 1994.
