Jakarta Records’ recording artist Blitz the Ambassador has another hot track for us from the soon-to-be-released Afropolitan Dreams. He’s put out a few songs already, including “Success” and “Make You No Forget,” which are consistently amazing. We can’t wait for the 28th.
Blitz’s music comes from his own story: a native Ghanaian negotiating living in New York, struggling to succeed in life, the music industry and, in this case, love. With the charismatic vocals of Nneka on the hook and some tight production, we have another feel-good banger.
The music enters in layers. First up, we hear an acoustic guitar strum over electric chugging, followed by a ’70s funk beat that is quickly tinged with an Afrobeat-style syncopated guitar line, and then followed by horns and drums copped from a gritty soul record. Suddenly, bam! The drums hit you in the face, and we’re in a ’90s hip-hop joint with more than enough boom bap to make you nod your head. Throughout the song different parts take the spotlight, creating a uniquely organic feel far removed from the typically static hip-hop beat. Think Pete Rock meets Fela.
Needless to say, we here at Afropop are anticipating the forthcoming Afropolitan Dreams on April 28. Pre-order it here.
