This year marks the centennial celebration of Route 66. Arizona’s 385-mile stretch of “America’s Main Street, has odd origins. Long before all the neon, diners, gas stations and motels dotted the humming highway, the US Army first charted a course along the modern-day path of Route 66, surveying Arizona’s high desert terrain for a wagon trail — with unlikely companions.
