Almost no countries, except for China and Russia, have said they’ll recognize it — this government is the fruit of a rigged election — but it does offer the regime a sense of staying power. Moving forward, Myanmar’s army generals will keep pulling the strings, but from behind the curtain, offering the new government a very thin veneer of civilian rule.
