The storied life of a northern slave: Venture Smith

Slavery wasn’t limited to the American South. In the late 1730s, a young boy in Guinea was kidnapped and taken on a slave ship to New England. He grew up as an enslaved person but went on to buy his freedom, and the freedom of his wife and children. Venture Smith would write the first published account of slavery in the America’s. Last year, Connecticut Public Radio’s Diane Orson met his descendants.
