As Iran’s currency wobbles, the country’s economy minister gets fired

Since July 2024, when Masoud Pezeshkian became Iran’s new president, Iran’s currency, the rial, has lost about 60% of it’s value. Parliament voted on Sunday to fire the economy minister. Pezeshkian has reiterated that he believes a nuclear deal might be the best way to relieve sanctions and rehabilitate the economy, but hard-line forces within the government have stymied him. The World’s Carolyn Beeler gets insights into the situation from Barbara Slavin, a distinguished fellow at the Stimson Center and an expert on Iran.
