In early 2017, people around the world started hearing stories about how authorities in Chechnya were persecuting people from the LGBTQ community. Reports of people disappearing, of deaths, torture and abuse started trickling out. In his new documentary film, “Welcome to Chechnya,” which debuts Tuesday on HBO, director David France follows crisis workers and victims both in Chechnya and throughout Russia. He offers an inside look into their dangerous and harrowing journey of escape. The World’s host Marco Werman speaks with France.
