The French debate Algerian colonial history

The World

A report about how to reconcile the French and Algerian people, commissioned by French President Emmanuel Macron, has failed to recommend France apologize or make reparations for its actions in Algeria. As The World’s Rupa Shenoy reports, Macron’s critics say he likely fears that an apology for French colonialism in Algeria would have made him seem like he’s being soft on current terrorism. But they say it’s racist to make that link and shows that North African immigrants and their children still aren’t seen as fully French.
