Spain has a plan to save rural villages one drink at a time

The beating heart of village life in Spain is the local bar, and many of these establishments need urgent life support. That’s why Spanish politicians have voted to offer the watering holes public subsidies. Their reasoning: bars serve much more than beer. They’re meeting halls, day care facilities, and recreation centers — all of which, they argue, are public services worthy of government funding. Reporter Gerry Hadden has the story.
