People in Europe used psychoactive drugs during the Bronze Age, possibly as part of ancient rituals, a new study has concluded. Key to the study’s conclusions were 3,000-year-old hairs found in a burial cave in Menorca off the coast of Spain. The World’s host Marco Werman spoke with Benjamin Breen, associate professor of history at UC Santa Cruz, about the study’s conclusions and what we can learn about the early relationship between humans and psychoactive drugs.
