Ecuador has been rocked by protests since Oct. 3, when President Lenin Moreno cut fuel subsidies that had been in place since the 1970s. His move was part of a package of austerity measures in line with a $4.2 billion International Monetary Fund loan. Indigenous groups have taken the lead in the protests and the intensity of the reaction has forced President Moreno to relocate his administration to Guayaquil, some 270 miles away. Marco Werman talks with The World’s Maria Elena Romero about what’s behind the worst unrest Ecuador has seen in a decade.
