The first delivery of heavy weapons from Germany arrived in Ukraine this week, marking the end to a longstanding German policy not to send lethal aid into active conflict zones. Germany also plans to modernize its own military in response to the war in Ukraine, with a more than $100 billion announced cash infusion this year. In a country where history looms large, many Germans are uneasy with these changes, and with Germany’s new proximity to war. The World’s Carolyn Beeler spoke to people across Germany to get a sense of how they’re feeling.
