Emergency preparedness has vastly improved globally — but there’s a ways to go

A tropical cyclone is making landfall in South Asia right now, prompting the evacuation of more than 170,000 people from low-lying areas in India and Pakistan. It’s expected to bring days of downpour and flash floods. The island of Guam is still reeling from a typhoon that hit last week, and people in the Western Hemisphere are staring down the barrel of hurricane season, which started this month.
