Oxford English Dictionary adds hundreds of East African words

The World

If you’re feeling hungry, you might want to eat a biting of nyama choma. A “biting” is a common way to refer to a snack in East Africa, and nyama choma is a popular grilled meat eaten in Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, among other countries. This is just one of about 200,000 East African terms that have been added to the Oxford English Dictionary in recent weeks. To discuss, The World's host Marco Werman is joined by Bebwa Isingoma, who is an OED consultant for Ugandan English. He is a linguist at Gulu University in Uganda.
