“Cancer’s New Battleground – the Developing World” from PRI’s The World

Cancer has touched every family so why would the developing world be any different? It’s often considered a disease of affluence, but about 70 percent of cancer deaths occur in low- and middle-income countries. And in these developing countries, the fight against cancer has barely begun. In this five-part series, veteran medical reporter Joanne Silberner takes us on a journey as we meet patients, doctors, and public health advocates waging a new campaign against a global killer.

In our efforts to make the world a better place, this series highlights how many of these cancers are preventable, that this is not a hopeless situation! The outcome of this series resulted in reaching millions across the globe and changing the conversation about cancer as a world health issue, particularly among global health organizations and funders. The National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, and Institute of Medicine bestowed their Communications Award on this series for “shining a light on the hidden toll cancer takes in impoverished nations.” These prestigious annual awards recognize excellence in reporting and communicating science, engineering and medicine to the general public.
