How The Dreamers Got Swept Up in The GOP Tax Bill

The Takeaway

Coming up on today’s show:

  • House and Senate negotiations are moving forward in order to come up with one tax overhaul plan. But there are a handful of big sticking points between the House and Senate bills, including the estate tax and debate over state and local taxes. Richard Rubin, a U.S. tax policy reporter for The Wall Street Journal, explains.
  • In September, President Trump announced that he was rescinding of Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, a move that is putting the onus on Congress to make a decision by March 5th. Adriana Gomez Licon, Hispanic Affairs Reporter for the AP, joins The Takeaway to discuss the fate of DACA and immigration reform.

  • This week, The Takeaway is looking at the future of the Republican Party and its many factions – from the #NeverTrump camp to the vocal anti-establishment wing of the party. And today we continue with the former head of the GOP, Michael Steele, chair of the Republican National Committee between 2009 and 2011.

  • Representative Al Green, a Democratic lawmaker from Texas, will force a vote in the House tomorrow on whether or not to impeach President Donald Trump. Cristina Marcos covers the House for The Hill, and she joins The Takeaway to talk about the potential repercussions of this maneuver.
  • On Wednesday, President Trump is expected to announce that he will officially recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and will allow the U.S. Embassy to relocate to the city. The move is expected to set off demonstrations and potentially halt any chance of peace between Israel and Palestine. Ambassador Dennis Ross, former Middle East peace negotiator under Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton, weighs in.
  • The International Olympic Committee has barred Russia’s Olympic team from the 2018 Winter Games in Pyeongchang, South Korea, as punishment for its systematic, state-backed doping. Rebecca Ruiz is domestic correspondent covering the Justice Department for The New York Times, and she got exclusive access to a key piece of evidence against Russia: The detailed journals of a chemist who helped Russian athletes use banned substances. She joins The Takeaway from Lausanne, Switzerland, where the IOC is headquartered.
  • Kristen Meinzer, a former Takeaway producer who came forward this week with allegations of sexual harassment by former host John Hockenberry, shares her experience.

This episode is hosted by Todd Zwillich
