Sen. John Kerry (D-Mass.) created a buzz of speculation when he appeared with two black eyes and a broken nose at a White House event on Monday.
Kerry’s spokeswoman Whitney Smith explained that the bruises were the result of a friendly hockey game over the holidays, according to The Hill. Kerry is a huge fan of hockey and didn’t want to miss the White House celebration of the Boston Bruins Stanley Cup win.
The hockey mishap reportedly happened right before he met Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, and the Boston Herald notes that there are pictures of Kerry wearing sunglasses while sitting down with the president.
Smith added that with a broken nose and two black eyes Kerry “must feel like Mitt Romney after South Carolina,” referring to Romney’s loss in the state’s primaries after a surprising surge by Newt Gingrich.

This might be slightly ironic in light of Gingrich’s ad earlier this month comparing the two Massachusetts politicians and pointing out their similarities and their “French connection.”
The ad said, “Just like John Kerry, he speaks French, too.”
