Lewis-McChord US army base on lockdown after equipment reported missing

United States Army Joint Base Lewis-McChord is under lockdown after "sensitive" equipment was reported missing, The News Tribune of Tacoma reported. 

Authorities conducted an inventory last month and are trying to determine how long the equipment has been gone, Chris Ophardt, a spokesman at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, told CNN. Several weapons accessories, including laser lights, are missing from the Washington base.

In the meantime, its entire 100-member infantry has been ordered to stay at Lewis-McChord until the investigation is complete. The lockdown began on Wednesday.

“They’ll be on base until the items are found,” said Matt Hinkle, the base's spokesman, according to the Tribune. “This is the unit’s property that’s come up missing.”

Soldiers in the 4th Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division unit can have day visits, but are required to sleep at the base at night, Ophardt told CNN. A $10,000 reward has been offered for information leading to the equipment’s return, The Washington Post reported. 

Last month, a helicopter crashed at the Base, killing four soldiers. The unit has been home from Iraq since September 2010.
