Billionaire Sheldon Adelson gives ‘substantial’ donation to Gingrich Super PAC

Billionaire casino owner Sheldon Adelson has given a “substantial" donation to a “super” political action committee (PAC) that supports GOP presidential hopeful New Gingrich, according to Reuters. Gingrich won the South Carolina Republican primary on Jan. 21, but has since been eclipsed as the party’s alternative to Mitt Romney by Rick Santorum.

Adelson, who is based out of Las Vegas, and his family have already given two $5 million donations to the super PAC, called Winning Our Future, the Washington Post reported. The source did not confirm the amount of this latest injection of cash, but said it was on par with Adelson’s previous gifts.

According to Reuters:

The money comes at a critical moment for Gingrich, whose struggling campaign is hoping to do well enough on March 6 in several conservative states – including his home state of Georgia – to justify staying in the race.

The super PAC will use the donation to fund three new ads to run in Georgia, Tennessee, Oklahoma and Ohio, four states that vote on March 6, known as “Super Tuesday,” according to The Post. The ads will also air in Kansas, Alabama and Mississippi, which vote later in March.

Gingrich has said he will stay in the Republican presidential nominating race until the party’s convention in Tampa in August.
