R. Sargent Shriver, the first director of the Peace Corps and a vice-presidential nominee, has been hospitalized in Maryland, according to a hospital spokeswoman. Shriver, a brother-in-law to former President John F. Kennedy, is in critical condition, a family spokeswoman said.
He is the father of Maria Shriver, the wife of former California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, and husband of the late Eunice Kennedy Shriver. Mrs. Shriver, the sister of President Kennedy, died in 2009 at age 88.
Shriver, 95, served as George McGovern's running mate in the 1972 presidential election against Richard Nixon.
He is being held at the Suburban Hospital in Bethesda.
