China’s AIDS sufferers find it difficult to get adequate medical care
AIDS sufferers in China are routinely turned away from hospitals when they seek treatment for non-AIDS-related maladies, while the hospitals that can help treat people with HIV aren't sufficient to treat everything, according to a newly release report.
The report from a Chinese AIDS activism group found widespread medical discrimination against those infected with the virus. AIDS suffers and those with HIV infections are funneled into infectious disease hospitals for treatment of all their illnesses, even though the facilities are often unequipped to deal with non-AIDS-related sickness. The Global Times newspaper described how discrimination can prevent those with HIV and AIDS from getting proper medical care.
"I injured my head in an accident a year ago in my hometown. I was sent to a nearby hospital, but doctors refused to help me after learning that I was an AIDS patient," Shen Zhiqi, 46, told the newspaper.
