The world’s longest bridge may not be its safest.

Chinese central television and Internet users have raised serious safety concerns about the world’s longest sea bridge, a 26.5-mile span near the port city of Qingdao that cost $2.3 billion and opened on June 30. CCTV has broadcast multiple photos and footage showing loose bolts, missing sections and other potentially serious safety problems with the bridge. The television network said bridge builders were under intense pressure to finish the project in time for the 90th anniversary of the Communist Party of China on July 1 and may not have had enough time to tighten bolts properly.
