Two recall elections in Wisconsin are being held Tuesday, to determine the winners of state Senate seats. The polls pair two Democratic Senators against several Republican competitors.
They are the last of a record nine recall polls spurred by a fight earlier this year over Republican curbs on public workers' union and bargaining rights.
Fighting to keep their seats are Jim Holperin, of Conover, and Robert Wirch, of Pleasant Prarie. Both opposed the anti-union measure, and even sought refuge in Illinois in an effort to delay a vote on its passage.
Last week, the Democrats won in two out of six recall elections on GOP state senators. But Progress Illinois reports this left the Dems one victory shy of the three needed to take control of Wisconsin.
According to Reuters, Holperin has the toughest race Tuesday – against Kim Simac, founder of the Northwoods Patriots Tea Party group. Conover, the state's 12th Senate District, has leaned Republican in the three years since Holperin was elected.
Wirch, meanwhile, takes on Republican Jonathan Steitz, in Wisconsin’s 22nd Senate District.
