The New York Police Department has launched an investigation into a video that surfaced online Monday, which features several officers dancing with scantily clad women at the recent West Indian American Carnival Parade in Brooklyn, New York.
The Wall Street Journal reports that Brooklyn’s borough commander "will look into the matter and determine if any rules were violated and if discipline is warranted — a sign the matter is seen as, at worst, a minor infraction." Serious misconduct allegations are usually handled by the department's Internal Affairs Bureau.
“I would have preferred it not have happened but I don’t want to make too much of it," Police Commissioner Raymond Kelly told reporters at an unrelated press conference on Tuesday.
“You have to put it in the context of the parade,” Kelly said. “I’ve seen officers in my experience…sort of, you know, get caught up in the spirit of the parade. These young women approached the officers. They didn’t go out of their way to be approached.”
The New York Post spoke with one anonymous female cop who was shocked by the video.
“Now that it’s out there, [police brass] are definitely going to try to identify these guys. [Those involved] are gonna have problems,’’ she said.
But an anonymous male cop dismissed the matter.
“It was a happy crowd,” he said. “Everybody was happy and having a good time at that point.’’
