US President Barack Obama walks to the Oval Office upon returning to the White House.
Ray LaHood, Obama's Transportation Secretary and the only Republican in Obama's Cabinet, believes that Republicans are focused on defeating Obama, and would rather sink the economy than allow him a political victory.
In an interview with the Daily Beast and Newsweek, LaHood said:
“I’ve been in Washington 35 years… and I’ve never seen a time when people have put their own personal political feelings over how we can get the economy moving."
He continued:
“The crowd that was elected the last time not only came here to do nothing, they also came to put down the president, and the way to put him down is not to give him any kind of opportunity to be successful.”
The comments came after Senate Democrats introduced another piece of the presidents American Jobs Act, which LaHood expects Republicans to block.
His views on the GOP's determination to defeat Obama has been expressed by Obama's Senior Advisor David Axelrod.
“Republicans made a decision right after the election – don’t give Obama any victories. The heck with putting people to work, because we can score points,” LaHood said.
