A train crashed into a bus carrying a wedding party in northern India Thursday, leaving at least 33 people dead and 35 injured, Press Trust of India reports.

North-Eastern Railway spokesman Amit Singh told CNN the accident happened at about 2 AM when a bus filled with passengers tried to cross an unguarded railroad about 160 miles south of Delhi.

A local journalist told BBC the train dragged the bus about 500 meters down the track.

The train was traveling from Mathura in Uttar Pradesh to Chapra in Bihar and hit the bus at a crossing in Kanshiram Nagar in Uttar Pradesh, PTI reports.

The bus was reportedly crammed full, carrying up to 100 people who had left a wedding party in Adupura village. The dead and injured were from the bus passengers.

BBC reports that those sitting on top of the bus were thrown off, whereas those inside were crushed.

The bride and groom were traveling separately and were not injured.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh announced a relief of 200,000 rupees ($4,545) to the family of each person killed, 50,000 rupes to each with a serious injury and 10,000 rupees for those with minor injuries, PTI reports.

Singh also ordered an inquiry into the accident.

Local media is reporting that the bus driver fled the scene.

Train accidents are common in India. A Mumbai-bound express train jumped off the tracks and hit an oncoming goods train in West Bengal last May, killing over 100 people.
