British military will never again be among superpowers: report

A report to be released Tuesday says Britain's military will "never again be among the global superpowers," the Guardian reports.

The report, titled Looking into the Black Hole, by the think tank Royal United Services Institute (RUSI) states that budget cuts have forced the military to shrink and it will not be able to recover.

"The UK will never again be a member of the select club of global superpowers. Indeed it has not been one for decades," the report reads. "But currently planned levels of defence spending should be enough for it to maintain its position as one of the world's five second-rank military powers (with only the U.S. in the first rank)."

It also states that Britain's army will have enough capacity in the future to assist in operations such as Libya and Afghanistan.

Britain's Ministry of Defense needs a substantial increase in spending to cover the costs of the replacement for the Trident nuclear deterrent, it states.

Meanwhile the think tank released a report on Friday saying that the NATO-led air campaign made progress in Libya thanks to a bit of luck, the Associated Press reports.

It said the Libya operation succeeded only through a mix of "improvisation, innovation, and good luck."
