US Coast Guard working to rescue injured yacht crew (VIDEO)

The U.S. Coast Guard is working to rescue four Clipper Round the World competitors injured during a storm about 400 miles from the California coast.

The Coast Guard has dispatched paramedics who plan to parachute down to the 68-foot Geraldton Western Australia, race officials said.

The sailors, who suffered back, rib and pelvic injuries, were aboard the Geraldton Western Australia when wind gusts and a large wave hit the vessel, the Associated Press said.

Rescuers expect to reach the yacht early Sunday, the news agency said.

The BBC identified the injured as Britons Jane Hitchens, Mark Burkes, Nik Brbora and Australian Max Wilson.

The group is among 10 UK registered yachts participating in the Clipper Round The World Yacht Race, BBC said.

The UK Press Association said more than a dozen other crew members were not injured.

The 11-month, 40,000-mile race started in Southhampton in July.
