US average gas price below $3.50 a gallon

It may be time to dust off your summer road trip plans. Instead of soaring this summer, gas prices across the US have been falling. 

The national average price for a gallon of gasoline fell to under $3.50 today, according to the AAA Fuel Gauge Report. That's 15 cents cheaper than a year ago and far below the $5 a gallon averages some drivers had been bracing for.

Gas is below $4 a gallon on average everywhere but Alaska and Hawaii, AAA's data show.

Los Angeles is seeing gas prices of below $4 a gallon for the first time since February, but the Los Angeles Times said smoothly functioning refineries are a key to keeping fuel prices down in the state.

Atlanta drivers are doing even better, with some finding gas for as little as $3.06 a gallon, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution said

Falling oil prices have been pulling down gas prices across the US.
