An internally displaced Syrian refugee collects a few apples and some bread at a refugee camp at Azaz along the Syrian-Turkish border on Feb. 10, 2013.
The UN refugee agency reported Wednesday about 1 million Syrians have escaped to neighboring countries, about half of them children, many less than 11 years old.
"With a million people in flight, millions more displaced internally, and thousands of people continuing to cross the border every day, Syria is spiraling towards full-scale disaster," said Antonio Guterres, UN High Commissioner for Refugees.
Panos Moumtzis, the UNHCR regional coordinator for Syrian refugees, told the Associate Press in Beirut that every day 7,000 Syrians cross into neighboring countries.
And while the government of Bashar al Assad and opposition forces said they are willing to consider peace talks, no meetings have been scheduled, according to Reuters.
