Pakistan officer killed in attempt to defuse bomb

A senior Pakistani officer died while trying to defuse an improvised explosive device in the northwestern city of Peshawar today, local officials said, according to Agence-France Press.
The officer, Hukam Khan, had managed to defuse one bomb but the second one exploded, injuring three officers standing nearby, said AFP.
Peshawar police officer Khurshid Khan told AFP the bomb "exploded when Hukam Khan was trying to defuse it."

Senior police officer Fazal Mola Dad told the Associated Press that Khan found the devices after being alerted that militants had been planting them in Peshawar's Matni neighborhood.
Khan had reportedly defused dozens of bombs over the past several years, said AP, and was also known for his bravery in battling militant activity.
